      <image:title>The Campaign</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2016, a group of women working in Cardiff got together to do something about the fact that not one single statue existed in the whole of Wales of a ‘real’ Welsh woman. Despite the amazing contribution of Welsh women to life in Wales, their achievements were not being celebrated in the way that men’s successes often have – by being immortalised, commemorated and celebrated with public statues. The achievements of Wales’ wonderful women were being hidden, or worse - forgotten. At that first meeting, Monumental Welsh Women was born. At the time, Cardiff was undergoing a dramatic redevelopment around the area you’re standing in today, which used to be the old bus station. Monumental Welsh Women persuaded Cardiff Council that the area now known as Central Square would be the perfect place for a statue. But not just any statue – the first statue of a historical Welsh woman, an artwork that would be world class, and a city landmark that everyone who visited Cardiff would want to see.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Campaign</image:title>
<image:caption>But how to choose the woman to be celebrated? Monumental Welsh Women worked with Women’s Equality Network Wales to draw up a list of 100 Welsh women to mark the centenary of women getting the vote in 1918. They chose 50 contemporary women and 50 historical women, all of whom were celebrated at an event in the Senedd in 2018. From that list of 50 historical women, Monumental Welsh Women and a panel of experts chose a shortlist of 5 who illustrated the breadth and depth of the achievements of Welsh women over the centuries. Working with BBC Wales, the 5 hidden heroines were put to a public vote to ask the people of Wales to choose who would be honoured with a statue in Wales’ capital. The winner was announced in January 2019. The woman chosen was Betty Campbell.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Betty Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachel (Betty) Elizabeth Campbell was born in Butetown in 1934 and raised in the poverty of Tiger Bay. A studious child who loved learning, she won a scholarship to Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff, but was told that a working-class black girl could never achieve the academic heights she aspired to. Always near the top of the class, Betty Campbell told her headteacher she too would like to teach but the response was: "Oh my dear, the problems would be insurmountable." Those words devastated her - but they also made her even more resilient and focused. She went on to prove her doubters wrong in the most inspirational way.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Betty Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>She overcame setbacks and racism to pursue her goal. In 1960 she was one of six female students at Cardiff Teacher Training College which was admitting women for the first time. Juggling a young family, she achieved her dream of becoming a teacher before going on to make history as Wales’ first black Headteacher. Betty Campbell championed her nation’s multicultural heritage throughout her professional teaching career and in her community; she provided a sense of belonging and identity for young people and her wider community. Under her leadership, Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown became a beacon for best practice in equality and multicultural education throughout the UK, a legacy that continues today.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Betty Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>She remained committed to the heritage of Butetown and the importance of its multiculturalism throughout her life “In our own unique way we were establishing an area where religion, colour didn’t matter – we all respected each other as people.” - Betty Campbell No-one fought harder to celebrate Wales’ diversity than Betty Campbell.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Sculptor</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in Sheffield in 1976, Eve’s early career was rare as it was similar to that of an old master from the renaissance. She started her career as a sculptor at the tender age of 17, working as an apprentice to the well known sculptor Anthony Bennett. Within months, having recognised Eve’s unique talent, Bennett recommended her to the UK’s largest sculpture and heritage company Scenic Route. At Scenic Route, Eve developed a reputation for high quality portraiture. Her work included public sculptures, often above life size, many of which can still be seen exhibited internationally in almost every continent.. At the age of 21 Eve’s dedication to her work was recognised by Scenic Route, when she was given the responsibility of heading the Sculpting Department, managing other sculptors and taking the lead on many more large scale projects worldwide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Sculptor</image:title>
<image:caption>She has to date worked on many major commissions for city centres, large institutions, and private collectors, such as the National Maritime Museum, London, where she created three life-size busts for the institutions' permanent collection. The Busts were to represent three marginalised groups not represented within the museums' collection. She also created a portrait of Professor Stephen Hawking for Cambridge University.</image:caption>
